Study Sesh

A responsive app that fosters cross-campus connection and collaboration
UX Design Case Study — CareerFoundry Immersion Project

Role: UX designer and writer
Duration: February 2023 – May 2023

The opportunity

College students often struggle to find reliable, consistent ways to collaborate, get feedback, and stay motivated. Traditional study forums and messaging apps lack the context, structure, and flexibility needed for productive peer-to-peer academic interaction.

How might we design a responsive web app that enables college students to easily connect with peers, share resources, and support each other across different devices and campuses?

The process

1. Discovery & Definition

  • Conducted a needs analysis by framing the 5 W’s (Who, What, When, Where, Why)

  • Created a detailed user persona (Alex Mendoza) to ground design decisions in real-life context

  • Developed key user stories to define core functionality:

    • Profile creation

    • Peer discovery and messaging

    • Collaboration tools and motivation features

2. Ideation & Design

  • Created low-fidelity wireframes using Figma to explore initial layouts and user flows

  • Refined into mid-fidelity wireframes with intuitive iconography and labeling to reduce cognitive load

  • Built mood boards to explore and test visual directions:

    • Chose a mature, gender-neutral palette for inclusivity

  • Developed a style guide to maintain brand consistency across all UI elements

3. Iteration & Feedback

  • Incorporated mentor feedback into high-fidelity wireframes

  • Made critical visual decisions, such as switching from a gray to a white background for better device compatibility

  • Added animations (e.g., scrolling, menu transitions) to enhance interactivity

  • Designed responsive layouts across mobile, tablet, and desktop using grid systems

  • Created final mockups for stakeholder presentation and usability testing
